Julia Lohmann & Gero Grundmann x Kazutaka Furukomi
This is a series of small hand-crafted tabletop containers inspired by the nested roofs of Japanese architecture. The pieces combine two traditional Japanese materials, lacquer techniques and seaweed (kombu), a staple of Japanese food. For the lids of the lacquered containers it is transformed into a rich glossy-green Kombu-veneer. Designer Julia Lohmann developed the material during her research fellowship at the Stanley Picker Gallery of Kingston University after discovering its potential during an art residency in Hokkaido, Japan.
